# JFIF converter > Browser-only file conversion. Selected files are processed on this device and are not uploaded to a conversion server. Source: https://localconverter.tech/jfif-converter Turn JPEG image content saved with a JFIF extension into a new JPG or PNG that fits a stricter upload workflow. The converter reads the actual photograph and re-encodes it, so the result is an ordinary image file that can be opened, attached or inserted elsewhere. ## Useful tasks - Submit a JFIF photo as JPG - Convert a downloaded image to PNG - Prepare a JFIF image for a document editor ## Steps 1. **Choose the JPEG image**: Add one JFIF, JPG or JPEG still image. Confirm the photograph is the intended source and is not an unrelated download with an image extension. 2. **Select JPG or PNG**: Choose JPG for a familiar photographic file or PNG for a lossless raster encoding of the decoded pixels. Neither choice recovers previously discarded JPEG detail. 3. **Create the converted file**: Run Create output to decode the JPEG content and write the selected format. The converter checks image contents rather than relying only on the filename. 4. **Open the new image**: Download the output and try it in the upload form or editor that rejected the JFIF. Inspect orientation and fine details in the saved copy. ## Settings - **Output format**: Choose output format according to the result you need. Available choices: JPG; PNG. The initial selection is JPG. ## A downloaded picture for an upload form A downloaded photograph is saved as .jfif while a form accepts .jpg. Add the photograph, select JPG and create the output. Submit the resulting JPG after checking its dimensions and any separate size limit imposed by the form. ## Check the result Upload a supported file, adjust the settings and create the output. Still images only; maximum 40 million decoded pixels. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged. ## Limits - Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading. - Still images only; maximum 40 million decoded pixels. - Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB. - Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents. - Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first. ## Questions ### What is the difference from renaming? Renaming changes only the filename extension. This converter decodes the JPEG image and writes a new JPG or PNG, which is useful when you need a verified output file rather than an extension change alone. ### Does PNG restore lost JPEG quality? No. PNG preserves the decoded pixel image without another lossy JPEG encoding, but it cannot restore details already lost in the source JPEG. The resulting file may also be substantially larger than the original photograph. ### Can I use a normal JPG here? Yes. JPG and JPEG are accepted alongside JFIF because they contain the same broad type of JPEG image data. Choose PNG when changing format or JPG when you need a newly encoded photographic copy. ### Will the result fit every form? A JPG extension solves only one compatibility requirement. A destination may also enforce dimensions, aspect ratio or file size. Inspect its requirements and use the resize or compression tools if those additional changes are needed. ### Does JFIF converter upload files to another service? Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory. ### Can I continue after changing pages? Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first. ## Related guides - [Compress image](https://localconverter.tech/compress-image.md) - [Resize image](https://localconverter.tech/resize-image.md) - [Crop & rotate image](https://localconverter.tech/crop-image.md) - [HEIC / HEIF converter](https://localconverter.tech/heic-converter.md) - [JPG to JPG](https://localconverter.tech/jpg-to-jpg.md) - [JPG to PNG](https://localconverter.tech/jpg-to-png.md)
