# JPEG XL converter

Decode a still JPEG XL image and save a JPG, PNG or WebP copy for applications that cannot open JXL. This is useful when receiving newer image formats or preparing artwork for familiar editing tools. The conversion keeps a still image workflow and rejects animated source files.

## Steps

1. **Add the JXL image**: Select one still JPEG XL file and confirm it is the artwork you need. Animated JPEG XL inputs are outside this converter’s supported workflow.
2. **Choose a usable output**: Select JPG, PNG or WebP according to the receiving application. Use PNG or WebP if preserving an existing transparent background is important to your design.
3. **Decode and create output**: Run Create output and let the JPEG XL decoder read the file. The image must satisfy the still-image pixel bounds before it can be exported.
4. **Review the converted image**: Download the new copy and inspect it in the target editor. Check colour, transparency and sharp edges because different encodings can change the visible result.

- **Output format**: Choose output format according to the result you need. Available choices: PNG; JPG; WEBP. The initial selection is PNG.

## Artwork for a PNG-only workflow

A supplied illustration arrives as JPEG XL, but a presentation workflow needs PNG. Add the still JXL, select PNG and create the output. Inspect the transparent edges in the downloaded PNG before placing it over a coloured slide background.

## Check the result

Upload a supported file, adjust the settings and create the output. Still JPEG XL only. Animated inputs are rejected. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged.

## Limits

- JPEG XL is decoded to still-image pixels. Animation and advanced HDR metadata are not preserved.
- Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading.
- Still JPEG XL only. Animated inputs are rejected.
- Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB.
- Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents.
- Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.

## Questions

### Can this create JPEG XL files?

This tool accepts JPEG XL as its input and exports JPG, PNG or WebP. It is intended to make an existing JXL usable elsewhere; the output menu does not offer a JPEG XL encoder.

### Are animated JXL files supported?

No. The converter explicitly supports still JPEG XL images and rejects animated inputs. Export the required frame from an application that understands the original animation before using this still-image conversion workflow.

### Which output keeps transparency?

PNG and WebP can represent transparent image areas, while JPG replaces them with white in this export. Select a format supported by your destination and inspect edge pixels against the background where the image will appear.

### Does the copy preserve every JXL feature?

The output is a newly encoded raster image in the selected format. It should be reviewed as that image, rather than assumed to retain every feature or metadata property of the original JPEG XL container.

### Does JPEG XL converter upload files to another service?

Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory.

### Can I continue after changing pages?
