PDF tables to CSV or Excel

Extract selectable-text tables into CSV files or an Excel workbook. Use PDF tables to CSV or Excel locally with practical instructions, output settings and format limits.

A practical guide

PDF tables to CSV or Excel

Extract tables from selectable-text PDFs into an Excel workbook or a ZIP of CSV files. Choose line-based detection for ruled tables or text-based detection where spacing carries the structure. Use the result as a starting table for analysis, with a careful review of merged cells, headers and values against the source pages.

  • Extract a ruled table into Excel
  • Create CSV tables from a report
  • Recover table-like text after searchable-PDF OCR

How to use PDF tables to CSV or Excel

  1. Choose a text-based PDF

Upload one working PDF whose table text can be selected. For a scan, create a searchable PDF with OCR first and review recognition quality.

  2. Choose detection and output

Select lines for tables defined by ruling or text for spacing-based structure. Choose XLSX for workbook sheets or CSV for separate table files in a ZIP.

  3. Extract detected tables

Run Process document to detect tables across the PDF. The combined extraction is bounded to one hundred thousand cells, so focus on relevant pages for a large report.

  4. Validate headers and values

Download the workbook or unpack CSV files and compare them with the PDF. Check merged headings, blank cells, column shifts and numbers before performing calculations or imports.

Understand the settings

Output
Choose output according to the result you need. Available choices: CSV; XLSX. The initial selection is XLSX.
Table detection
Choose table detection according to the result you need. Available choices: LINES; TEXT. The initial selection is LINES.

A ruled table for spreadsheet review

A report contains selectable text in clearly ruled tables. Choose lines and XLSX, then extract. Open the workbook and compare row counts, headers and representative values with the original pages, correcting merged-cell interpretations before using the data in calculations.

Check your result

Choose a file, adjust the settings, then download the result. Extracts selectable-text tables. For scans, first run searchable-PDF OCR, then use text detection. Irregular/merged cells need review. CSV tables are in a ZIP. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged.

What to know before you start

  • Browser table extraction uses selectable text and detected page grid lines. Merged cells and irregular layouts need review.
  • Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading.
  • Extracts selectable-text tables. For scans, first run searchable-PDF OCR, then use text detection. Irregular/merged cells need review. CSV tables are in a ZIP.
  • Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB.
  • Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents.
  • Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.

PDF tables to CSV or Excel: common questions

Which strategy should I try first?

Use lines when visible ruling defines the table cells. Use text when rows and columns are implied by text spacing, including searchable OCR output. If no table is found, inspect the source and try the other suitable strategy.

Does this directly recognize a scanned table?

The extractor needs selectable text. For a scanned page, first run English OCR to make a searchable PDF, then try text detection. Recognition errors and irregular spacing can still affect the table, so compare extracted cells with the scan.

Why are numeric cells stored as text?

The XLSX output writes extracted values as text, preserving their displayed strings rather than guessing numeric types. Review separators, dates and leading zeros before converting selected columns into numbers or dates in your spreadsheet application.

How are multiple tables packaged?

XLSX output places detected tables on separate sheets named by page and table position. CSV output creates separate table files inside a ZIP, allowing you to inspect each detected structure before combining or importing them elsewhere.

Does PDF tables to CSV or Excel upload files to another service?

Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory.

Can I continue after changing pages?

Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.
