Video thumbnail

Choose a moment and save it as a still image. Use Video thumbnail locally with practical instructions, output settings and format limits.

A practical guide

Video thumbnail

Save one video frame as a PNG at a selected timestamp and width. Use it to create a reference still, illustrate a written walkthrough or choose a candidate thumbnail without a manual screenshot. Inspect the extracted moment for motion blur and framing before adding labels or publishing the image.

  • Select a thumbnail candidate from a video
  • Capture a still for a walkthrough
  • Create a reference image from a recorded moment

How to use Video thumbnail

  1. Choose the video source

Upload one supported video or GIF with readable video frames. Locate an approximate moment that clearly represents the clip’s subject or the action you want to illustrate.

  2. Enter the timestamp

Set the timestamp in seconds from the start of the source. Choose a point before the recording ends, with fractional seconds when useful for selecting a moment.

  3. Set image width and extract

Choose the output width and run Video thumbnail. The engine decodes one frame around that position and scales it proportionally into a PNG image.

  4. Check the chosen moment

Download and inspect the still at the intended display size. Try a nearby timestamp if the frame catches a blink, motion blur or an incomplete transition.

Understand the settings

Timestamp (seconds)
Timestamp (seconds) accepts values from 0 to 7200, in increments of 0.1. The initial value is 0. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files.
Maximum width
Maximum width accepts values from 16 to 1600, using whole numbers. The initial value is 800. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files.

A reference still for a tutorial

A tutorial recording shows the completed result around eighteen seconds. Enter timestamp 18 and width 800, then extract the PNG. Inspect the labels and cursor position, and try a nearby timestamp if a menu or transition obscures the final state.

Check your result

Upload a file, adjust settings and run the tool. All processing uses the local engine. Media jobs are bounded to 120 seconds; animations to 240 frames, 30 seconds and 64 million decoded pixels. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged.

What to know before you start

  • Files are processed on this device. Browser memory and engine-specific limits apply. Save results before reloading.
  • Media jobs are bounded to 120 seconds; animations to 240 frames, 30 seconds and 64 million decoded pixels.
  • Upload one file with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB.
  • Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents.
  • Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.

Video thumbnail: common questions

Does this create a thumbnail grid?

No. This tool extracts one PNG frame at the chosen timestamp. Use Extract video or GIF frames when you want several sampled moments packaged together, then select or arrange those images into a contact sheet.

Can I get an exact source frame number?

The control uses a timestamp in seconds rather than a frame-number index. Seeking and decoding determine the extracted frame around that point, so try nearby fractional timestamps when choosing a precise expression or a clear action state.

Does the output keep the source aspect ratio?

Yes. The selected width is used with proportional height scaling, so the still retains the source frame’s proportions. This tool does not expose a thumbnail crop; use the image crop tool afterward for a different rectangle.

What if the timestamp is beyond the end?

The timestamp must be before the media ends. Check the source duration and enter an earlier value; a long source still needs a known supported duration so the engine can validate and decode the requested frame.

Does Video thumbnail upload files to another service?

Processing runs in this browser, on your device. Files and pasted input are not uploaded to a conversion server. The website and required engine assets must load first; large operations depend on available device memory.

Can I continue after changing pages?

Selections and completed jobs stay available while you navigate inside this tab. Use My files to revisit results. Reloading or closing the tab clears the workspace; download results you want to keep first.
