Compress image

Make an image fit your upload limit. Use Compress image locally with practical instructions, output settings and format limits.

A practical guide

Compress image

Prepare a photo or graphic for an upload form with a size limit in KB. This tool searches compression settings and can also reduce dimensions when allowed. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP, then check the actual output size and whether your requested target was reached.

  • Fit a profile photo under an upload limit
  • Reduce a product photo for a listing
  • Make a screenshot easier to attach

How to use Compress image

  1. Choose the image

Add one still JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or TIFF image. Use the original photo when available so compression starts with the most useful detail.

  2. Set a realistic target

Enter the maximum size in KB and select JPG, PNG or WebP. Allow smaller dimensions if keeping the original pixel count is less important.

  3. Compress the copy

Run Compress image and wait for the size search to finish. The engine tries supported quality settings and, when permitted, several smaller dimensions.

  4. Check size and appearance

Review whether the target was met, then download the result. Check small text, faces and edges before submitting the image to your destination.

Understand the settings

Target size (KB)
Target size (KB) accepts values from 1 to 102400, using whole numbers. The initial value is 100. Change it for a specific output requirement, then check the result before processing more files.
Output format
Choose output format according to the result you need. Available choices: JPG; PNG; WebP. The initial selection is JPG.
Allow smaller dimensions if needed
Turn “Allow smaller dimensions if needed” on only when it matches your intended result. The initial state is on. Read the workflow and output limitations below when this changes how the original content is processed.

A photo for a 100 KB form

A large portrait needs to fit a form with a 100 KB limit. Choose JPG, set 100 KB and permit resizing. Download the result only after checking the reported target status and that the face remains clear.

Check your result

Set an upload limit, such as 100 KB. You can allow smaller dimensions when quality changes alone are not enough. PNG compression can reduce the colour palette. A very small target may need smaller dimensions or a different format. Multiple images download together as a ZIP with an individual size report. Open the saved output in the app or workflow where you plan to use it. Check one representative result before repeating the same settings with more files. The original files stay unchanged.

What to know before you start

  • PNG compression can reduce the colour palette. A very small target may need smaller dimensions or a different format. Multiple images download together as a ZIP with an individual size report.
  • Upload up to 20 files, at least 1 with a combined size of at most 100 MB. The completed output must fit within 200 MB.
  • Files are checked by the local engine; a matching filename alone is not proof of valid contents.
  • Jobs run one at a time with a 180-second deadline. Temporary files expire after approximately 30 minutes; download them before clearing or restarting the app.

Compress image: common questions

Is the target size guaranteed?

No. The search uses a bounded range of quality settings and optional smaller dimensions. If none meets the target, the tool returns its smallest candidate and reports that the target was missed.

Why can PNG look different?

PNG compression here can reduce the colour palette. That can make a screenshot smaller, but gradients or photographs may show colour changes. Compare the result at normal viewing size before using it.

Should I allow resizing?

Allow resizing when the upload limit matters more than the original dimensions. Leave it disabled when another application requires a fixed pixel size, and consider a more suitable format or a less restrictive target.

Does JPG keep transparency?

JPG cannot store transparent areas. The tool places transparency on white when producing JPG, so select PNG or WebP when the image needs a transparent background for use over other colours.

Does Compress image upload files to another service?

Local-server mode sends the selected files to the installed server on this computer. Optional browser mode processes its supported inputs inside the browser without creating a server job. Neither mode uses an external conversion provider. Initial setup and installation of local assets can require internet access.

Can I continue after changing pages?

Local-server jobs and pending selections can be revisited through My files inside the app; server results expire after approximately 30 minutes. Optional browser results are not stored in My files. Download browser results before leaving, navigating away from or reloading this page. Closing or reloading the tab also discards pending browser selections.
